LA DOLCE VITA: THE ART OF THE BUILD

A study in high-end materials and intentional lighting at La Dolce Vita. Working for the contractor who redesigned this Dover, NH staple, we focused on the intersection of deep, dark textures and the brilliant "pools of light" that define the new atmosphere
THE BACKSTORY
Shooting for a contractor is a different beast than shooting for a restaurant owner. While an owner wants to see happy customers and plates of food, a contractor wants to see the execution. For the La Dolce Vita redesign, my goal was to document the craftsmanship and the specific material choices that transformed this Dover space into a high-end destination.
The design of the restaurant relies heavily on dark, sophisticated materials. In the world of interior design photography in NH, "dark" can be dangerous—it’s easy for a space to look flat or muddy if you don't respect the light. I decided to lean into the darkness rather than fighting it. We utilized the "pools of light" created by the new fixtures to punctuate the room, creating a sense of drama and intimacy that wide-angle, wash-out lighting would have destroyed. It’s about showing how the light interacts with the grain of the wood and the matte finishes.
The undisputed hero of the shoot was the brilliant green tile bar. Amidst the moody, dark palette of the rest of the restaurant, that bar functions as a visual anchor. As a commercial photographer in Portsmouth, NH, I’m always looking for that one element that makes a portfolio piece pop, and this tile was it. Capturing the reflection of the overhead lighting off those tiles required a precise angle to ensure the color stayed vibrant without becoming a distracted glare.
This project is a key addition to my architectural photography portfolio because it demonstrates the balance between technical lighting and narrative storytelling. It proves that you don't need a "bright and white" space to create a welcoming environment. Sometimes, the most inviting stories are told in the shadows, punctuated by a bold choice like an emerald bar.
