Coastal Energy, Community Spirit: A Look Behind the Lens at the SSC Rescue Run

Four runners move across the rocky New Hampshire shoreline during the SSC Rescue Run at Odiorne Point, with blue sky and coastal landscape in the background.

There’s something unforgettable about documenting an event where people show up not just to run, but to give back. That was the spirit at this year’s SSC Rescue Run, held at Odiorne Point in Rye, NH. Hosted by the Seacoast Science Center, this event wasn’t just a fundraiser—it was a celebration of local energy, environmental mission, and community connection.

As an event photographer based in Portsmouth, NH, I’ve worked with a wide range of clients—from corporate teams to builders, interior designers, and nonprofit organizations. But this event stood out. The Rescue Run perfectly captured the intersection of physical movement and meaningful cause, and I was honored to be invited to photograph it.

From Start Line to Shoreline: Photographing a Mission in Motion

This was my first time photographing a live race, and it brought new challenges and new inspiration. The energy of the runners was contagious. Positioned along the coastline trail, I had the opportunity to capture runners mid-stride against the dramatic New Hampshire seascape.

As a photographer, I’m always looking for that balance of environment, emotion, and composition—and this event offered all three.

This kind of storytelling is what makes community event photography so rewarding.

Why Photography Matters at Community Events

For many nonprofits, events like this serve multiple purposes. They build awareness, raise funds, activate volunteers, and strengthen partnerships. But long after the finish line has been crossed, it’s the images that help those moments live on.

Professional photography isn’t just a luxury—it’s a vital part of how organizations communicate their mission. Whether it’s for social media, press releases, fundraising materials, or sponsor outreach, the right images build trust and visibility.

At the SSC Rescue Run, that meant switching between wide, scenic compositions and intimate candid shots—from muddy sneakers to sweeping crowd scenes.

Odiorne Point: A Photographer’s Dream Location

Odiorne Point State Park is one of the most photogenic spots on the Seacoast. Rugged shoreline, shifting skies, and wide-open trails make it an ideal location for storytelling photography.

If you’re planning a charity race or community fundraiser in New Hampshire, this setting offers both natural beauty and accessibility. As a local photographer, I know the light patterns, tide shifts, and best angles for everything from portraits to action shots.

Seacoast Science Center: A Partner in Purpose

The team at the Seacoast Science Center made this event shine. Their work in marine mammal rescue and ocean education is critical, and it was clear how deeply they’re connected to the community.

Michelle Dillon, their marketing manager, wrote:

“These are amazing! Possibly the best run pictures I’ve seen… This is a perfect mix of everything.”

I’m grateful to Michelle and the SSC team for trusting me to capture the day. Events like these are why I do what I do.

Capturing the Unexpected: More Than Just a Race

One of the things that surprised me about this event was how multifaceted it was. There was the main race, a fun run for kids, a vibrant welcome area with booths and giveaways, and a coordinated beach cleanup.

As a nonprofit and fundraiser photographer, it’s important to stay agile—ready to shift gears as the event unfolds.

All of these unscripted moments contributed to the narrative of the day and gave SSC more options for sharing their story.

Giving Back Through Photography

As a local business owner and photographer, I believe strongly in supporting causes that align with my values. I regularly donate my time and services to nonprofits, schools, and community organizations in and around Portsmouth.

Photography is how I give back—and how I help these groups amplify their voice.

I’ve also worked with organizations like Gather, WSCA, and Portsmouth Middle School PTA to document their events and outreach efforts.
