Documenting the art of peace at Portsmouth Aikido for Portsmouth City Lifestyle. This wasn't just about capturing movement; it was about photographing a philosophy that prioritizes harmony over conflict.
THE BACKSTORY
When I was assigned to cover Portsmouth Aikido for the City Lifestyle feature "The Way of Harmony," I knew I couldn't approach it like a standard gym shoot. Aikido translates to "the way of harmony with the spirit of the universe," and the atmosphere of the dojo reflects that immediately. It’s a space that feels both incredibly intense and remarkably quiet.
As a commercial photographer in Portsmouth, NH, I’m used to directing my subjects, but here, I had to be a ghost. The practice is centered on non-aggressive self-defense—using an attacker’s own energy against them—which creates a beautiful, circular motion that is notoriously difficult to photograph without it looking like a blur. I leaned on my architectural photography portfolio roots to first find the "stillness" of the dojo—the light hitting the mats, the calligraphy on the walls, and the traditional weapons—before I tried to capture the practitioners.
The real magic happened when I stopped trying to freeze the action and started looking for the connection between the students and the Sensei. There is a profound level of trust required to let someone throw you across a room, and capturing that split-second of eye contact or the focused breath before a move was the "lightning in the veins" moment I was looking for.
By the end of the session, we had a library of lifestyle photography in NH that felt authentic to the art. We captured the grit of the physical training and the serenity of the meditation that bookends every class. It’s a reminder that even in a high-motion environment, the most powerful shots are often the ones that capture the quietest moments of intention.
