THE BACKSTORY

I remember pulling up to the 3 Bridges Yoga studio on High Street and feeling a bit of dread about the conditions. As a commercial photographer in Portsmouth, NH, you’re often at the mercy of the Seacoast’s unpredictable weather. The brief for the "Yoga as Community" feature required a bright, inviting, and airy aesthetic, but the sky outside was a flat, uninspiring gray.

However, as soon as I stepped inside, the architecture of the space changed my mind. The studio is blessed with massive, 10-foot north-facing windows. In the world of architectural photography portfolio work, northern light is a secret weapon—it’s the most consistent, soft, and "luscious" light you can find, especially on an overcast day. Instead of fighting the grayness with artificial strobes, I leaned into it. The clouds acted as a giant, natural softbox, illuminating the space with a soft glow that perfectly matched the grounded, peaceful vibe of the studio.

This shoot was about more than just capturing poses; it was about the concept of "finding home." As highlighted in the City Lifestyle feature, 3 Bridges is a cornerstone of the Portsmouth community—a place where people come to find a creative and grounding anchor. My approach to lifestyle photography in NH is always to look for that "lightning in the veins"—the moment where the subject truly connects with the space. Having a subject who moved with such grace and intention made it easy to capture the quiet, communal energy that defines this studio.

By the end of the session, the "miserable" weather had provided the perfect canvas for a set of editorial photography in Portsmouth that felt both authentic and warm. It was a reminder that intentionality beats gear every time. We didn't need a sunny day to tell a story about warmth and community; we just needed the right windows and a bit of patience to let the light do its thing.
