Maxxology

Coming from a background of shooting static structures and meticulously designed kitchens, stepping into the world of fashion for the first time felt like a massive pivot. However, I realized quickly that a good photo is built from the background forward. For this feature on Maxxology, I didn't start with the clothes; I started with the space.

I leaned heavily on my architectural photography portfolio experience to scout the boutique. I looked for the textures that matched Maxx’s "class with a little sass" vibe—the stacked stone walls, the muted leather seating, and the clean lines of the displays. I spent the first part of the shoot ensuring the environment was "intentional." If the room doesn't tell a story on its own, the person standing in it will always feel like an afterthought.

Once the lighting was dialed in and the "room" was ready, I brought in my more recent experience with seacoast business portraits. Maxx has a powerful presence, and the goal was to capture her personality without it feeling like a stiff, staged commercial. We moved through the space, letting her interact with the environment we had just "built" with light and composition.

As a commercial photographer in Portsmouth, NH, this project taught me that the disciplines aren't that different. Whether it’s a 150-proof distillery or a high-end fashion boutique, it’s about finding the "lightning in the veins" of the brand. The result was a library of images that felt less like a "fashion shoot" and more like an authentic look at a local entrepreneur in her element. It turns out, when you get the architecture of the shot right, the fashion takes care of itself.
